At last, dinner theatre with legs!
The view from College Street isn’t remarkable. The stone façade of the former Baptist church that graces the corner of College and Shaw is relatively nondescript with only a stately awning over the entrance to distinguish the building as Revival Bar, the Little Italy nightlife giant in downtown Toronto. Beyond those sombre doors, however, a very different type of revival is underway. An underground movement has begun.
Speakeasy is a journey back in time to an era when a night on the town was an affair wrapped in romance and sensuality. A perfect excuse to dress up, a chance to see and be seen, a delicious meal to delight the palate with decadent cocktails on offer and to complete the experience, entertainment that had the whole town talking. Speakeasy is a social event unrivaled by television, Internet, or film - an elite, sexy, dinner cabaret experience unlike any other entertainment option on offer in Toronto.
A soft, smokey haze fills the space, and candlelight dances over a sea of intimate tables decked in simple finery as twinkling chandeliers dance high above from the 20’ ceilings, awaiting well turned out guests who filter in slowly, dressed to the nines and eager with anticipation.
Fragrant rosemary and heady, mouth-watering aromas envelop guests the moment they set foot into the venue.
First on the bill at Speakeasy is a sumptuous prix fixe dinner designed by executive chef Christopher Woods. No detail is spared with the seasonal menu created to compliment the unique entertainment on offer.
The stage at the end of the room is adorned with rich velvet, and in the dim glow of crimson the silhouette of a woman swathed in satin is revealed. A blood red rose is tucked behind her ear and her satin-gloved hand fingers the mic delicately as she welcomes patrons with a breathy salutation. She then begins to purr a repertoire of torch songs and contemporary ballads as the evening begins.
Speakeasy’s lineup of entertainment is curated by none other than Toronto’s experts in sensuality, the truly original cabaret theatre mavens Les Coquettes. A live musical act each night eases guests into the world of Speakeasy while the dinner experience unfolds. Then, as dessert is presented the main event begins – a sizzling variety show featuring some of the finest talent the city has on offer. Les Coquettes give you singing, dancing, aerial acrobatics and breath-taking burlesque, and they’re inviting their favorite Toronto artists to join them in the fun.
"Speakeasy is an electrifying night out for playful adult audiences of all ages and is poised to become the talk of Toronto." Says Artistic Director and co-founder of Les Coquettes Catherine Skinner. "Be the first to tell your friends about this amazing dinner cabaret."
Speakeasy premieres on Tuesday, February 14th and runs year long with the exception of August. Doors open for seating at 6 pm, dinner begins promptly at 7 pm and will be accompanied by live music. Performances begin at 8 pm, during dessert. Speakeasy dance party to follow. Tickets are $35 to $85 and can be purchased at www.lescoquettes.com.
